ATIKOKAN CENTENNIAL MUSEUM & HERITAGE PARK

Celebrating all that we are!

Situated on the winding Atikokan River, the Atikokan Centennial Museum and Heritage Park exhibits the unique history of this area. Featuring local history exhibits, regional rock samples, a 12,000 year old Barren Ground Caribou antler, found at the bottom of Steep Rock Lake, and the Shevlin-Clarke logging locomotive. Discover the heart and spirit of Atikokan.

Large artifacts from lumber and mining sites are on display throughout the Town of Atikokan and at the Heritage Park, which is easily accessible by a foot bridge beside the museum.  The Heritage Park is also the landing site for Path of the Paddle and the Canadian Trail passes the museum. Steeped in a tradition of outdoor activity, Atikokanites have a paddling history from competitive cross-Quetico paddling between the United States and Canada to Canada's Centennial cross-country races and cross-continent solo paddling.

The Town of Atikokan was established as a divisional point on the Canadian National Railway in 1900, and became a thriving boom town during the 1950's and 1960's with the development of mining at Steep Rock Iron Mine and Caland Ore Company. Bursting with the influx of a new labour force the community of Atikokan established itself with a culture of outdoor activities which continues to this day.

Come for a visit and discover all that we are!
